As in past years we are selling tickets in advance and plan to have the grandstand sold-out well in advance of the event.
Even though the event has gotten bigger, ticket prices are the same as in prior years.
Sea levels were more than 200 feet lower than present levels, and the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico shorelines were 100 or more miles seaward of their present locations. Archaeologists recognize sites dating to each subperiod primarily by the presence of distinctive projectile points.
Global temperature was rising rapidly during the interval from 15,000 to 11,000 years ago, albeit with occasional sharp reverses, and the great continental ice sheets were retreating, causing the coastline to move rapidly inland. The Early Paleoindian is characterized by Clovis and related projectile point forms.
Several hundred Paleoindian points are currently known from the state, although the number is tiny compared with the tens of thousands of later points that have been found.
No large Paleoindian sites have yet been excavated in Georgia, and much of our knowledge about these peoples is based on discoveries elsewhere in the region and beyond.
C., sea level was within a few meters of its present elevation, and climate and biota approached modern conditions. Most likely, Paleoindians moved over large areas, on foot or by water, in small bands of twenty-five to fifty people.
Their group ranges centered on stone quarries, shoals, or other particularly desirable environmental features.
The Circle D Rodeo Arena sits in the middle of the sticks. The place was crawling with Wranglers, Ariats, and Skoal rings. “An attack on our hometown, Yankees killed and wounded a quarter of our men.” Confederate Park has a white monument that stands tall. It’s here to remember farmers, shopkeepers, and anyone who died defending their home. Still, you should know, people here haven’t changed altogether. They followed his scent through the mossy trees like they were on a coonhunt. One teacher says, “Told my kids, ‘I don’t care if you pee your pants or tee-tee in a tin can, you ain’t leaving this classroom.” Teachers said silent prayers and kissed foreheads all day.
Off 90, there’s an uneven road that leads to a dirt arena. One little girl is walking a Labrador on the sidewalk. “Battle of Marianna lasted thirty minutes,” an old man tells me. Jackson County deputies canvassed the area with hounds. This area isn’t a place the evening-news reporters like to show you. It’s a place where men wear boots to booster club dinners. Where average people once died in their streets because these mossy trees were home.
